A combination PDA cellular phone with a large (640x480 or 800x600) viewable screen. The unit is about the same size and weight as a standard cell phone.
Unit Weight: ~5 oz.
Size (in inches): 2.5 x 5.0 x 0.75 (closed)
Size (in inches): 6.4 x 5.0 x 0.75 (opened)
What is the purpose?
The purpose of the device is to provide an all in one PDA/phone/camera with a massive screen that dwarfs the other options on the market.
What is the implimenation?
It contains a video camera that can swivel 360 degrees and some form of mass storage device (SD, memory stick, or micro drive). Could run Linux, Windows CE, or PalmOS?. Video conferencing is another main goal of the device. Input devices include a scroll (and press) wheel, possibly a touch screen, voice recognition. Speaker phone is a must. There is NO LCD in the device. The screen is done via electronic ink and therefore the screen can be rolled up. Some kind of backlight may be required (I'd suggest electroluminescent material because it can be rolled up). The phone, audio recorder, and camera can all be used while the device is in the closed position.
Optional Add-Ons
Add ons could either be part of the device or implimented via a plugin system where you could remove the camera and add any of the following options into the camera spot.
Laser based PDA keyboard.
Thumb print reader.
Projector (either one color laser or some form of miniture DLP).
How it works?
The screen is stored in a roll in the left hand unit of the device. When the right hand unit is pulled away from the left hand unit the screen unrolls (like a scroll). Spring loaded support arms in the back expand out keeping the back of the electronic ink screen rigid. When the screen is fully extended the support arms lock in place.
The below image is an example (rough transparent cutaway) of the e-paper style screen rolled up in the left side handle of the PDA.
